On May 11th, 2020, a group of U.S. senators called for a suspension of student post graduate work permits in the U.S.

The senators wrote to President Trump strongly urging him to suspend the program. “While the merits of such a program are subject to debate, there is certainly no reason to allow foreign students to stay for three additional years just to take jobs that would otherwise go to unemployed Americans as our economy recovers,” they said.

After Australia, Canada has the third most sought-after international student program, seeing it has the third largest international student population in the world with over 642,000 students.

The Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) states that studying in Canada offers important benefits to international students including:

1. The quality of the Canadian education system,

2. Canada’s reputation as a tolerant and non-discriminatory society, and

3.  Canada’s reputation as a safe country.

In addition, Canada is a popular study destination due to these additional factors:

  • Affordability – the Canadian currency is a lot more affordable

  • English is spoken at most Canadian colleges and universities

  • Access to a growing job market that requires youth talent

  • Ability to apply for study and work permits at the port of entry

  • Option to convert post-graduation work permit to Canadian permanent residence

Eligibility and Length of Stay

So whos is eligible to apply? Students have to have been in full-time studies, with the exception for the last term where students are allowed to be part-time.

A post-grad work permit can be a minimum of eight months but a maximum of three years depending on the student program length.
